August News Update

We have heard that the local fighting in the Kasese  is now over and it’s safe to travel again.  So my wife and I will be making a trip to visit our projects in early November.  If anyone else would like to join us then we would be pleased to hear from you, but we will need to know no later than 2nd September.  Also we cannot take people under 18.

We are also pleased to say that we have raised nearly all of the £3,500 needed for vaccinating the pupils and staff at St Marks against hepatitis B.  We hope to be able to carry out these vaccinations early in the new school term.

We are still looking for a new Treasurer from the end of September. Our current treasurer is standing down as her second baby is due, and we are struggling to find a replacement.  Ideally we could do with someone in the Bucks area to be able to liaise easily with our Chairman, Dennis, but we can probably manage if they are from a different location.  Indeed if anyone is interested in serving as a Trustee in any role we would love to explore the opportunities with you.  Our charity officers and Trustees normally serve for a minimum of 3 years so we are constantly looking to find supporters who are willing to serve the charity in this way.

We thought it would be nice to share with you recent emails received from Pastor Lumika and Wilson who heads up the youth work so well.

July News Update

We have two important matters that we thought we should like to share with our supporters

Firstly we have need for a new Treasurer from the end of September.

Secondly Dennis, his wife Alison, and perhaps one other Trustee are planning to visit our projects in Western Uganda probably in early November, or maybe late October. Unfortunately there has been some recent fighting in the Kasese area and right now it is not safe to travel.  Please see the BBC news website for more information http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-28185349. Your prayers for this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming matters are resolved before too long, we would be delighted to take maybe 2 or 3 supporters with us, especially if you have never been before.  You would need to cover your own costs for airfare, travel and accommodation plus some spending money. You may think you have no talent to take on such a trip, but from our point of view we are pleased if you can just come for the experience and then tell others about it. If you are not able to come you may know of others in your churches or circle of friends who would value the opportunity.  We would like to book flights as soon as we can be sure it's safe to travel again. So we are keen to hear from you as soon as possible if you are interested in visiting the projects with us.

If you are able to help with either of our needs please feel free to respond to prestons.home@tiscali.co.uk with a little bit of information about yourself and why you would like to be involved either as a Trustee or join in on a trip.  Please also provide a contact phone number and we can explore the opportunities further with you. However in any event please pass this news to anyone you know who  may be interested and most important remember these matters in prayer for us.

Community Health Day Fund Raising Event March 2014

On Saturday March 1st 2014 the Chippenham Male Voice Choir gave a concert in aid of An African Dream.

The idea for this concert was conceived by Colin and Rosie Greenwood who already knew about the charity and were keen to help raise funds. Colin is a member of the choir.

Colin and Rosie, together with trustees, Rob Smith and Liz Edmondson-Smith, helped to organise this event.
The Concert was held in the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin in Bishop's Cannings, near Devizes, Wiltshire. Other trustees that attended were Isabel Murray and Helen Edwards.

The evening started with a humorous welcome from Rob Smith who then introduced the founder and its patron - Sophie Campbell-Wynter. Sophie did a very interesting talk on the history of An African Dream and thanked everyone for coming to support this fundraising event. Rob then gave an update on how the charity is moving forward and how the charity work will benefit from the funds raised at this event. It is hoped that we will be able to run a Community Health Day at St Mark's School, East Kasese. This would enable a team of doctors, nurses and assistants to advise, check and treat those in the local community who cannot afford healthcare.
Under the direction of Bob Jones the choir began with a very popular opening number, 'Let the River Run'. The choir continued to entertain us with some lovely numbers such as 'The African Alleluia' and 'Zambezi'. Alongside the lively singing we also had a brilliant solo piece on the clarinet from Bob, very humourous verse from Pete Field and some great solo singing from a few members of the choir. After the concert the audience were invited to look at  the photographic display on the work of An African Dream, visit the Charity stall with african crafts and enjoy the drinks and light buffet included in the ticket price. The evening was a great success and a great many people came to support the charity. Two people signed up to sponsor an orphan at St Mark's School. From donations and ticket sales £600 was raised in total. We were very pleased with this result.Rob and Liz would like to thank all those who came to support them including Ann Jarvis who ran the African Dream Stall and Rosie and Colin who did the programme. Our thanks also goes to all those who helped to sell tickets at the door, prepare food, set up the church and clear up afterwards.
